As many fashion image-makers take tentative steps towards fast-flicking alternatives, dipping their toes in the world of short films, Kloss are leaping head-first into the field giving fashionistas something to really chatter about. Loyal members of i-D’s happy family, Kloss co-founders Alec Maxwell and Herod first worked with the magazine two years back, slipping behind-the-scenes as super stylist Edward Enninful and snapper fantastic Emma Summerton shot four mind-bogglingly magnificent models for the cover of The P.Y.T Issue.

With many photographers shutting up shop to film cameras, reluctant to reveal the inner-workings of their magic, Kloss’s charm and discretion make them the perfect partners. Working closely with several photographers and complementing their i-D triumphs with work for models.com and Vogue Italia, earlier this year Kloss stepped out from their behind-the-scenes stomping ground and started working on their own creative briefs. After meeting the captivating and enigmatic Daniel Lismore at i-D’s 30th birthday celebrations Alec and Herod set about lifting the lid on London’s larger than life club king with their short film about his nocturnal antics.

Ever concealed by their cameras, i-D online has thrust them into centre-stage finding out the why, where, when and how. To accompany the interview Kloss have shot two extra-exclusive shorts, featured here alongside other fantastic flicks they’ve contributed in the past.

Can you describe Kloss in 5 words?
We love to make videos.

When did you first become interested in film-making?
Herod: As a kid I was fed feature films by my Dad; Halloween, Weird Science, Coming to America, A Clockwork Orange. I was also obsessed with music videos. Watching the ‘Teardrop’ video by Massive Attack was a turning point, it was striking and different but fit perfectly with the track. That’s what made want to learn video-making.

Tell us about how the two of you first came to work together…
Alec: We have known each other since we were teenagers, we are from the same area and studied at the same university. The first video we worked on together was actually for i-D, a video called ‘Making Of The P.Y.T Issue’ from the set of Emma Summerton’s shoot. Edward Enninful had asked me to make a video for the website, I asked Herod if he would like to work on it with me. Sometimes it can be difficult for two people to work together creatively, but for Herod and I, it was a good fit. When we started editing we had good chemistry. At that point, there was no intention of building a company. Once the video went onto the i-D website, people started saying they loved it. Lane Crawford commissioned us to make three videos shortly afterwards. It was a very organic start to working together. Within a few months we were building our website and blog.

How do you think the fashion industry’s perception of film-makers has changed in recent years?
Movies have always been a huge inspiration to fashion, something that the fashion industry has looked up to for many years. Today we’re in the time of the internet, where film is being made specifically for fashion, in a non-movie format. Gareth Pugh showing his collection in video format is a perfect example. Nick Knight and SHOWstudio have really pioneered this medium, and pushed it forward. Web content, iPad apps, digital advertising, viral videos, blogs etc have opened the gates for fashion film. Film-makers are becoming an essential part of the fashion industry.

Tell us about your relationship with Daniel Lismore…
A: We met Daniel the evening of the ‘i-D Covers Book’ launch. The room was filled with beautiful people; Kylie Minogue, Kristen McMenamy, Liu Wen, but for me, Daniel stood out. He was wearing a pig mask, which looked like bad plastic surgery. The next day I got hold of his number and called him to ask if we could make a video of him. We spoke about what we could do, and came up with the idea of the mock i-D cover that he would wear to his club night in East London. The whole process was fun and a real collaboration between ourselves and Daniel. After filming him for two days, we’d become friends. The way he puts himself together is amazing but on top of that, he is a real sweetheart. We just finished a second video (shown here) with Daniel and look forward to working with him again.

Who would you most like to collaborate with?
We hope to continue to collaborate with models.com. The model casting at Givenchy is always amazing so it would be great to film backstage at the show. There are so many people outside of fashion we would love to collaborate with too: Björk of course, Little Dragon, Kanye West.

What’s your favourite flick of all time?
H: Weird Science, Rear Window, La Haine.
AM: Virgin Suicides, Basquiat, Unzipped.

A Hollywood blockbuster is being made of your life. Who would you like to see play you?
H: Jason Statham or Hugh Jackman.
A: I’d have Cate Blanchett play me, just like she played Bob Dylan.

Who would play your love interest?
H: Salma Hayek.
A: Yes, that would be interesting, Cate Blanchett and Salma Hayek.

Who would be the director?
H: Spike Jonze.
A: Kloss London, of course.

Who would you most like to see on the cover of i-D and why?
Daniel Lismore, he’s a creative genius.

When guests at i-D's recent 30th birthday celebrations saw a Warholian headshot of Kate Moss floating above the heads of fellow party-goers, mutterings of something funny going on were abound.

Over the course of the evening it unfolded that Kate's image was supported by a headdress and that headdress sat atop the visage of a certain Daniel Lismore. Amongst the crowds Daniel caught the attention of i-D collaborator and filmmaker Alec Maxwell. The rest, as they say, is history. This video documents an evening (and morning) in the life of Daniel Lismore, the emphasis being on the nocturn as this club kid lives more for the midnight hours than for egg and soldiers; a string of successful club nights to his name, keep up to date with his moving and shaking and where best to find him here. To describe Daniel's get-up as a costume would be a complete falsity; for him, his appearance is no more a novelty than the jeans and jumper, or shirt and tie most people don each day. His eyelashes are unreal, his fish-pout is beyond and his wink isn't half bad either! Ladies and gentlemen... Daniel Lismore.

If you thought that London nightlife was ever somewhat boring and repetitive, then it has at least one saviour. Though primarily working on his Shoreditch club night Shabba Dabba Da, Isabella Blow protégé DANIEL LISMORE is lifting the lid on the box of possibilities for partygoers all over.

…what makes his party experience unique...
There are actually more than a few ‘unique’ experiences you may find at one of my parties. I think you would notice the vast amount of creative dressers. Most spend hours on their outfits just to go out and party in them for one night, using it as an outlet to show their talent. Then you may find celebrities, fashion designers & musicians floating about, a crowd not often seen without crazy transvestites and naked people serving food from tabletops. I think I should stop there and let you find out for yourselves.

…the one item of clothing he’ll never throw out…
I was once given a woven gold belt from a tribe that no longer exists. That I would never get rid of.

…fur and fur protesters…
I don’t just wear animal fur. I wear human bones and hair, which is legal if they are over a certain age. Mine are very old. I love animals and wouldn’t order one to be made into a coat, but as I have a vintage pop-up shop, furs come my way daily and I collect them. I sell everything for five pounds in the shop so that everyone has the opportunity to make London’s nightlife more colourful. I sometimes see homeless people in my area and give them a fur or two. Fur protesters are amazing, anyone who stands by their opinion is great, but to physically assault somebody on the street, especially on more than one occasion, is a contradiction. After all, we are all animals.

…the one piece of advice someone has given him that he’ll pass on for the rest of his life…
Adam Ant once told me “fuck critics”. I took it the wrong way and ended up in a sex scandal.

…Kenya…
Ever since I was a kid and saw pictures on the TV of children starving, I wanted to help. I decided I would go and live with the Maasi in Kenya and help, hands-on, for a charity. It changed my life. I am now so grateful for everything in my life. Afterwards, I often compared the club scene to my experiences in Kenya and realised there was more to life than bitching and backstabbing fashion folk. The experience made me a better person.

…the road ahead…
I am working very hard (a lot of Facebook whoring) on my new night monthly night Shabba Dabba Da. I want to move further into the art world. I am a walking piece of art and I have just got back in to painting and sculpture. I think I belong there. Who knows what’s next? A coffee table book? A collaboration with a fashion designer? A t-shirt range?

"Icons of Our Time: Daniel Lismore"

To understand why Daniel Lismore is such an expedient component to society as it is today, one needs only to know him. And yet that is perhaps why his role in 21st century improvement has as yet been so devastingly overlooked. Lismore is a shy character who rebukes any kind of negativity and reponds only with all that was before.

Lismore is intelligent in a way ultimate to the progress of modern humanity; It does not concern any particular school of thought; it concerns all schools of thought. Philosophers might try to claim him as one of them, so might visual artists or leaders in style and of fashion. But Lismore is none of these. Lismore simply is. And there is nothing else one should be.

Lismore's main achievement has been his incredible resolve and self-belief which have remained resolute despite showers of criticism and years of critic's unanswered questions. His love of freedom and liberty has lead to the most exciting creative movement in today's youngest generation.

At 17, Lismore was scouted by a top modeling agency. Not long after that, this image of a young 'debonair' was printed in L'Uomo Vogue:

Lismore was an internationally successful model, based in Milan, getting paid five figure sums for the most prestigious of fashion campaigns. There was no doubting Lismore's beauty, but as the fashion industry naturally proved to be a fickle business, Lismore edged further away from it. He moved back to London where he started to found a fashion movement, based entirely on the acquisition of experiences. His messages were freedom, love, equality and colour. London responded rambunctiously.

Lismore showed himself as a likeable leader and gathered a large group of followers and fellow-inspirers who would accompany him to his parties and attend social events with him.

It is extremely commendable that Lismore remained approachable and well-mannered throughout the course of this huge change in his life. It would be what would later lead to his success proliferating at such a fantastic speed.

In 2009 he was rightly considered to be the most exciting creative force in London. But all of this was still 'underground'. Despite frenzies of paparazzi with HRH, Prince Harry and fashion royalty, Kate Moss, Lismore remained known only to the few interested enough to research London's more artsy scenes.

2010 was a pivotal year for Lismore. He successfully collaborated with New York legend, Larry Tee to create the fastest growing successful party in London, 'Shabba-dabba-da' and ID magazine took the initiative to feature him on their online site for 2011.

What Lismore has to offer now is simply a continuation of his journey, but as of 2011 this will finally be to a mass audience. We say: catch Lismore now, while you can, as he'll soon be swathed in security and inaccessible to the millions who will want to shake his hand.

London 'scensters' on "The Kylie Show"

Lady Gaga, Rihanna, Kylie Minogue, Robyn, Mark Ronson, Roisin Murphy, Ke$ha, Alexandra Burke, Beth Ditto, M.I.A, Paloma Faith, La Roux. That’s quite a list of the pop-stars who currently make up the European music scene, isn’t it?

They have in common a love, reference and use of London’s club-scene creatives- yet these people are lesser known. Scottee, Daniel Lismore, Jodie Harsh, Andre J, Mika Doll and the exquisite Lady Lloyd are the creative engine of this, but are often hidden behind the popular artists they inspire.

The club-nights Circus, Shabba-dabba-da, Tranny Shack, Nancy, Wearable Art for Durable People and The Face often achieve cult status among generations, yet the people behind these are seldom talked about as much as the stars for whom they create a vital platform.

With the punks of the 80s and the ‘Indie Kids’ of the 90s, it had long been assumed that the heaviest influence on their fashion choices was the music youngsters listened to. “I think the opposite is true,” says style-artist, Daniel Lismore. “It's fashion that inspires music. The London fashion scene brings these people together and then seemingly out of nowhere these new genres of music are created. Because people can’t directly hear the fashion, they don’t see at all” he says, in a matter-of-fact kind of way.

The London club scene certainly does inspire fashion. Lloyd Dixon, alias 'The Lady Lloyd', has a one-off look and has modeled for Vivienne Westwood. Vivienne mentioned recently, "I don’t know about styles and trends. Much more to me is Lady Lloyd. He is fantastic."

High fashion is also laden with club scene based artistes. Mika Doll, a leader of her own style direction, is the face of Illamasqua, an alternative make-up brand tipped to go huge in 2011.

The latest big names to watch out for are wonderfully exotic: Oozing Gloop, Sorapol Chawaphatnakul, Medusa, Uma Gawd, Pandemonia. The world waits impatiently for musical direction and fashion tips from these innovators.

Viktor Wynd Fine Art are delighted to present Cody Critcheloe’s first U.K. show following on from recent solo shows at Peres Projects, Berlin & The Hole, New York.
The exhibition includes video, painting, drawing, and installation, the sum of these parts could be called “Kansas City Gone Wild” this big mess in the Midwest!
Cody Critcheloe is the mad mustachioed front man and creative ringleader of SSION: a band pronounced SHUN like the word PERCUSSION and FASHION and EXPLOSION. SSION is a collaborative confluence of creative kids in Kansas City. This queer punk performance art band just came out with BOY, a feature length movie documenting Cody’s life as a small town punk kid addicted to junk food dreaming of stardom who becomes a glamorous pop star with the help and hindrance of a gaggle of crazy dames. Archly witty and abounding and self-aware parody and pop-cultural collage, this film composites various music videos Cody made for SSION songs from 2007-2009 and links them together with mockumentary interviews, tour footage and cultural critique. Shitty green screen and handmade painted cardboard props abound, as do hot fags, hot dance moves, and smoking hot costumes by Peggy Noland.
Cody will be installing his exhibition like a sweet hangout zone and video lounge.

Stacey Switzer of Grand Arts writes “First things first! It’s SSION, pronounced “shun,” as in mission, fission, ambition—all
apt words to describe the gesamtkunstwerk or total work of art that is Cody Critcheloe
and the queer punk/performance/art band he invented ten years back as a high school
student in Lewisport, Kentucky. In the time since then, SSION has released 4 full-length
records, toured extensively throughout the United States, and enjoyed cult status among
fans and music writers who have lauded Critcheloe as everything from Out magazine’s
Hottest Artist of the Year to “Prince’s love child”i to the “one true master” of “high-concept
sleaze pop.”ii Despite gushy reviews from taste-making music blogs, indie magazines,
and the mainstream press, SSION has largely (and only until now, one hopes) escaped
the attention of the contemporary art world and critical art press. Here’s why, I suspect:
SSION is more fun than we think art should be. Critcheloe’s songs are catchy, not
abstract, and his visuals and live shows are crafted to appeal to more than an art-going
crowd. SSION could easily cross over to become a pop phenomenon—a potentiality (or
prophecy) which, in a stroke of self-reflexive genius, Critcheloe has already written into
the narrative arc of his work to date. The story of SSION is a raucous, louched up, campparody of Critcheloe’s own life, in which a small-town punk kid hooked on doughnuts
and pizza follows his dreams with razor focus to emerge as a svelte, smoky-eyed pop
star embraced by adoring crowds. And here, it seems, is the catch. While the annals
of art and film give us plenty of examples to draw on for theorizing the artist’s alter ego
(Duchamp’s Rrose Sélavy) the image-obsessed dandy (Warhol, Hirst, Koons, etc.) the
high-camp auteur (Waters, Jack Smith, and recently, Ryan Trecartin) and the concept
band (Yoko Ono, Tracy and The Plastics) the discourse is less prescribed for an artist
and musician who straddles all of these genres while aspiring to create work that actually
is pop in the broadest and most populist sense of the word.
SSION’s first feature-length film, BOY, affords a fresh opportunity to consider the band’s
work in the context of popular media and within the discourses of contemporary art. To
situate the work in this way is to necessarily highlight a degree of fluidity, criticality and
complexity in the work that far exceeds the typical coming-of-age movie or arena concert
experience. “

We searched high and low to find and cast the perfect boys for this story.
I guess we call ourselves creative dressers. Although when I was doing the casting I asked for crossdressers. I think in the past there has been a negative association in the media with crossdressers so we don't really use that term. We are all more than that anyway. Everyone in the shoot is part of London's nightlife history. Bright, young, beautiful individual's with talent and their own view on fashion.

The Pop story was quite beautiful but for me very sad. It was based on the cross dressers of Cairo, Egypt. There are so many people around ther world are not allowed to be themselves, some countries it is illegal to show how you feel inside, like Egypt. It is so wrong that we could not risk shooting the editorial with the scenesters the story was based on. We are so lucky to be able to live our lives as we do.

I got my black lippy out and painted the trainers black and he took his jeans off. The bouncers were still not happy so they never got in. Could I be more? I am & Yes... Just you wait!

-AVALON’S LATEST CLUBBING INCARNATION, HITTING TOWN ON SATURDAY 17TH JULY -

For those who crave immortality through iconography, Shabba-Dabba-Da storms onto London’s party circuit; a clubbing event blending the world of high fashion with the Capital’s night life and spearheaded by a transatlantic meeting of minds.

East London trailblazer and promoter Buster Bennett, famed for a decade of his Willy Wonka-esque creations in underground clubbing, teams up with Larry Tee, New York’s notorious bastion of the new-garde. Joining the two is Daniel Lismore, a living incarnation of the Blitz Kids lineage and a regular in the glossy pages of Vogue.

As the smoke clears and recessionistas search for the newest hot-spot, Shabba-Dabba-Da gears London up for a boom-time party like no other; a Warholian interpretation of a utopian enclave in a dystopian world of fame, fortune and capitalism. Imagine The Blitz Vs Studio 54, with Jacuzzi’s.

The event will take place on Saturday 17th July (and then once a month) at Avalon, East London’s newest cocktail bar, lounge and club. Set within the heart of Shoreditch, yet with a truly international feel, Avalon attracts a diverse and discerning crowd from all over London. The venue mixes traditional Oriental themes with edgy design elements.

Its marble cocktail bar is adorned with LED strips and the lounge offers guests the opportunity to relax in an opulent and eclectic space filled with discreet alcoves and huge flamboyant Baroque furniture. The dark and hedonistic club space provides the perfect area for late night dancing and the garden at the rear of the club, lined with red brick railway arches, is a huge hit with smokers.

The venue will offer a place of refuge for London’s Glamour-Glitz kids and kinder folk.

Guests are encouraged to dress up Pantomime-Hollywood and dance to Pop, Classic Pop and Dance-Pop supplied by Erol Sabadosh (Boombox resident), Larry Tee and Buster Bennett’s latest creations, stylist/DJs Maximus Crown & Munroe Bergdorf. Hosting provided by the fabulous Daniel Lismore and the latest dress-up icon, Burger Kim.

Daniel Lismore, of Vogue Magazine infamy, will host Avalon’s indulgent lounge while O.M.G, East London’s latest scenester, will hype up the crowd on the dance floor.

Documentation, performance, photography, filming and visuals will be undertaken by the art-stars of London’s avant-garde.

“This party will bring the high-brow fashion bottle-service private club crowd together with the underground tastemakers and club kids that give London it’s unique edge,” says co-creator Larry Tee. “The music direction is designed to be a collage of the sing-along familiar toe-tappers and the exculsive underground groovey tracks that haven’t been heard at ANY club in London or throughout the world. The night will offer good clean fun with a wink to the rebel spirit of the East Side, a combination that is always needed in London; that Shabba Dabba Da feeling!”

Larry Tee

Larry Tee reached legendary status on the New York night club circuit as co-creator of Disco 2000 (of Macaulay Culkin’s Party Monster fame). He was also behind the Electroclash Festivals in NYC, Berliniamsburg (the club that gave the hipster neighborhood “its groove back” according to The New York Times) and The Love Machine, which launched TV celebrity RuPaul (he also co-wrote RuPaul’s 4 million selling song Supermodel (You Better Work)).
He is also an acclaimed songwriter and producer/remixer that has worked on songs by many world famous artists, including Lady Gaga, La Roux, Princess Superstar, New Order, Andy Bell of Erasure, Major Lazer, and Peaches.

Daniel Lismore

Labelled “London’s most outrageous dresser” by American Vogue , Iconic Club Kid Daniel Lismore started out as a successful male model. At 18 he held his first night at Kabaret Prophecy, attracting the likes of Pamela Anderson and Alex Rose. He then moved on to Jodie Harsh’s legendary Circus, tasked with bringing the rich, famous and ultra creative down to the club. Famed for his jaw dropping-ly eccentric outfits, it wasn’t long before Lismore was being asked to wear them at fashion parties and music videos (including Kylie Minogue’s WOW and Alexandra Burke’s All Night Long.)

Since then he’s been behind a number of huge club night successes including Beach Blanket Babylon’s Slave to Fashion, Work! @ Heaven and Vogue. He’s worked with Isabella Blow, Mario Testino, Adam Ant and Angie Bowie and can boast Prince Harry, Amy Winehouse, Kate Moss, Alice Dellal and Matt Lucas as guests of his events.

Hello! It has been a while, I have been a busy bee with a few things like Clubs... Slave to Fashion at BBB and other pop up clubs like Vogue @ Willa's & Marquis De Sade as well as working with The Last Tuesday Society.
I have also been working on my fashion photography work under another name(I can't tell you it as I dont want my cover to be blown just yet!)
I have been working on some other projects, helping young talents become successful. I will blog about them along the way.
I have just become the events programmer at Punk night club in Soho. (So if you have any ideas on nights, need a venue for parties, events, band nights ect or are interested in hosting or performing get in touch daniellismore@gmail.com)

After fashion week I decided I would get more creative and productive again. I was lacking in posative thinking and a lot of negative people got me down!
